Homemade Sour Cream

Updated: Dec 13, 2021

Sour cream is one of those ingredients that is commonly used in a variety of baked goods and desserts but is quite expensive to buy. Therefore, many people tend to avoid following recipes that require sour cream. This easy homemade alternative, although thinner than its store-bought counterpart (due to the lack of artificial thickeners), provides the same taste and helps you save some money!

Ingredients:

½ cup fresh cream

¼ cup full fat milk

1 tbsp lemon juice

Method:

  1. Add the cream, milk and lemon juice into a glass jar.

  2. Secure the lid of the jar and shake vigorously for a minute until all the ingredients are well combined.

  3. Remove the lid and cover the jar with a paper towel.

  4. Secure the paper towel with a rubber band.

  5. Leave the jar untouched in a cool, clean spot on your kitchen counter for 24 hours.

  6. Leaving the mixture overnight on the counter may seem like the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. However, the acid in the lemon inhibits microbial growth and makes it safe to consume.

  7. Once 24 hours have passed, you will notice that the solid component of the sour cream has separated from the liquid that has gathered below.

  8. Remove the paper towel and stir the sour cream using a spoon to make the mixture homogeneous.

  9. The sour cream is now ready to be used in a variety of ways!

  10. Store the sour cream in an air-tight jar in the refrigerator. It remains fresh for a week.
